That got me to thinking about how a former colleague of mine <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Michelle-Alexander/168304409924191" target="_blank">Michelle Alexander</a> just published a <a href="http://www.newjimcrow.com" target="_blank">book</a> with that title, which shows how the U.S. criminal justice system functions as a contemporary system of racial control.</p> <p>So then I hopped on over to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Crow_laws" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a> for a history lesson, and did you know that Jim Crow wasn’t an actual person? The phrase “Jim Crow” was a pejorative expression meaning “Negro,” originating from a song-and-dance caricature of blacks performed by a white actor in <a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/21/Thomas-D-Rice-1832.jpg" target="_blank">blackface</a> in the 1800s. (Yikes.)</p> <p>So when we say, “the new Jim Crow” are we actually basically saying, “the new n-word?”</p> <p>Actually, no. “The new Jim Crow” can be a warning that American lawmakers are trying to pass new racial segregation laws that would reject members of our communities and make them separate but equal (as blacks were during the time of Jim Crow laws.) Or it could mean that we already have a criminal justice system that does this on its own.</p> <p>Watch out for anti-immigrant “papers please” laws like Alabama’s HB-54 and Arizona’s SB 1070.
